Fun with 2D and 3D Shapes! ◻️🧊🔵
10th Dec 2025
Third Class have been exploring 2D and 3D shapes in Maths. Some of our students worked in groups to construct a variety of 3D shapes using matchsticks and playdough, helping us see how these shapes are built from 2D faces and understand the relationship between the two.
Building on this activity, we then used lots of different 3D shapes to create printed winter pictures. Printing with these shapes really helped us see and understand the 2D faces each shape has—all while creating super seasonal artwork!
The children had lots of fun experimenting and learning through hands-on activities. It was a wonderful example of playful learning in action, perfectly reflecting the aims of the new Irish Primary Maths Curriculum.
We also combined art with Maths to investigate different types of pyramids—painting the base of each pyramid and printing it to discover which 2D shape it created. You can see some triangular-based pyramids and square-based pyramids in our photos.
